Auditions now open for the NZ Secondary Students Choir
Current NZSSC members' term is coming to an end and auditions are now open for the 2019/20 choir.
NZSSC membership brings with it a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn from our best vocal coaches and consultants, bond with other talented young singers from across the country, and perform both nationally and internationally. NZSSC members learn and perform a wide variety of music, both classical and contemporary, including works by some of New Zealand's finest composers.
The choir meets for rehearsals and performances every school holidays in one of the main centres, with an international tour towards the end of the two-year membership term. 2017/18 member Takerei Komene is now the Auckland Youth Choir’s conducting intern. He describes NZSSC as ‘a life-changing experience’; watch Takerei here: www.nzzschoir.com
Many members go on to a professional music career, some achieving international success such as Johnathan Lemalu, Christopher Bruerton, Anna Leese Guidi and Madeleine Pierard. Internationally acclaimed tenor Simon O’Neill (NZSSC vice-patron) credits NZSSC as the catalyst for his operatic career that sees him performing in some of the world’s most magnificent venues. Simon joined NZSSC in 1988 as a school boy at Ashburton College. He went on to the NZ Youth Choir before studying at the Manhattan School of Music. “NZSSC gave me my love of singing,” he says.
Rising opera star Benson Wilson (NZSSC member 2007-10) was the winner of the 2016 Lexus Song Quest and is currently studying at The Guildhall in London. He says, “NZSSC gave me the taste of what it's like to make music at a high level”.
The current choir has just returned from an incredible tour to Hong Kong and Shanghai. In Hong Kong, they won fans of all ages as Resident Artist at the Belt & Road World Choir Festival, where they quickly became the audience favourites. They also performed with top high school and university choirs, and for the New Zealand Consulate General.
To audition for the 2019/20 choir, candidates need to be full-time New Zealand secondary students and apply online before 21 September at: www.nzsschoir.com/membership.
